Senior Spencer Jackson, a voice which could silence a room, stood underneath the stage light on Sunday afternoon with his acapella group for their final rehearsal in the auditorium on March 16 at one o’clock. The strong singing pulsed through the speakers. After he finished, he started thinking about STUCO and his planning for prom. With graduation nearing, Jackson balances role as a Student Council President and being part of JayBlues during his senior year.
“Choir has shown me that music can be really impactful for other people; it can impact people’s emotions and either make people feel happier or really make someone feel emotional,” Jackson said.
He explored this idea of involvement in the JayBlues group, where he participated in performances throughout the year. Jayblues recently made quarter-finals in the auditorium and got second overall. They continued to Cincinnati, Ohio for semifinals and received fourth place overall, they were one point away from third place.
“He wants to be a good leader and a good human, and I think that’s what Student Council embodies being a good human being and Spencer tries to do that every day,” STUCO adviser Jessica King said.
Jackson demonstrated his commitment through his role on the Executive Board of the STUCO, where he takes part in organizing events and supporting not only his classmates but the whole school. In previous years, Jackson was on the sophomore class cabinet and the junior class cabinet. When he was on the junior class cabinet, he got to plan prom and market it to all of the juniors and seniors.
“Spencer leads with his heart. He is a very caring individual and wants to ensure that all individuals’ opinions and thoughts have a space and he takes time to kind of think through those before moving forward on decisions that we make as a council and I think that’s a really good leadership skill to have,” King said.
His approach to leadership has also been recognized by his teachers, who have acknowledged his consistency in involvement and his participation in class and student council activities. They described him as a student who is very creative and takes initiative within all extracurriculars and academics.
“There is nobody I know that works as often and as hard in everything he does as Spencer. It seems that almost every time I talk to him, he’s doing something important,” senior Matthew Esser said.
Esser is one person who has seen Spencer’s dedication and the effort he puts into everything he does within. The two met during their freshman year through STUCO. They bonded over time and their friendship grew stronger over the next four years. His friends say he is a great leader and always doing something important.
“I knew I wanted to be some kind of leader and go off to college. At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do after college, but I knew I wanted to do something in leadership,” Jackson said.
His leadership in choir and STUCO helped guide his decision to a college and career path. Jackson plans to attend the University of Arizona, where he will major in business management and minor in Spanish. He chose business management because it offered opportunities to lead and work with people in meaningful ways. While he’s excited to enjoy his college experience, he also says he’s focused on learning as much as he can to prepare for the future.
