Science teacher Wiley Meade and history teacher Ellen Meade are preparing to move to New Mexico to open a bike shop in the town of Ruidoso. The opportunity came after they traveled to the area last summer while looking into an upcoming Xterra triathlon race. During the visit, they learned that a local bike shop was looking for new owners. After discovering the opportunity, they began the process of purchasing the business.
“It was kind of by accident that we decided to open a bike shop in New Mexico. We do Xterra triathlon races and found out the world championship race was moving to New Mexico, so we went to check out the town,” Ellen Meade said.
While visiting the town, they learned about the bike shop while speaking with a real estate agent and explored the area. The idea of owning a bike shop connected with their long-time interest in biking. The process of purchasing the business included financing arrangements, legal paperwork and help from family and friends as they work toward completing the purchase. As the process continues, they will operate their shop full-time and live in the area.

“The most exciting part is yet to come, and that will be when we are there full-time running our business and living in an area where you can swim, bike, run, hike, and camp all in the local area,” Wiley Meade said.
Students have also been impacted by the news of the move since many students have had them as teachers in middle and high school. Sophomores Kendra Sheldon and Haylee Warrening both said they are gonna miss them very much.
“I knew they liked biking, but I didn’t expect them to move and open a bike shop. I think it will be fun for them,” sophomore Kendra Sheldon said.
They hope the shop will continue serving local residents and visitors while supporting outdoor activities in the community. They also plan to contribute to cycling events in the area and help support the local biking culture.
