On Monday, March 9, the Liberty City Council met for its regular session at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The council, led by Mayor Greg Canuteson, discussed more than $41.05 million in proposed industrial development, revenue bonds, potential changes to the water, sewer and solid waste rates, as well as several infrastructure projects across the city.
The council approved changes to water, sewer and trash collection rates, potentially meaning less spending money for snacks and outings for teens.
According to Vicki McClure, “The average residential customer using 5,353 gallons of water per month and has a wastewater winter water average of 3,900 gallons is $5.80 per month.”
In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, Liberty will be hosting a year-long celebration in 2026. The council advanced a plan Monday night to plant 250 trees throughout Liberty, to serve as a lasting gift to future generations. Under the proposal, the trees would be a variety of species and have an estimated lifespan of 250 years. As well as planting trees, Red, White, and Blue lights will be hung across the city to honor our nation’s history.
“I think it’s really cool what the city is doing. It will make the city look more inviting, and the trees will grow with the community,” Junior Gracyn Vaden said.
Council members also approved applying for federal grants to improve the MO-291 and Leonard Street intersection, the road has had over 62 crashes in the past 5 years, twice the critical rate. Upgrades will include better signage and potential intersection modifications to reduce accidents and potentially help congestion management. The project also aims to make the area more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly.
“The city has needed to improve a lot of our roads; we have a lot of problems with congestion and potholes. I’m glad they’re finally doing something to fix it,” junior Heidy Henderson said.
The next regular session meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 27, at City Hall or online at libertymissouri.gov. The March 9th meeting has already been videotaped and published.
