Mr. School Spirit and Ms. Peppy

Every year the Student Council elects a boy and a girl with an immeasurable amount of school spirit to represent each of the four graduating classes. During homecoming spirit week, the nominees go all-out during all dress-up days and activities to try and prove their worthiness.

“It’s an opportunity for all grades to get involved, since homecoming king and queen are for the seniors only,” Counselor Melanie Prince said.

The voting for Mr. School Spirit and Ms. Peppy is not the same as it is for the homecoming court; instead it is settled with the annual Penny War held during homecoming week during Liberty Hour.

Similar to a mini fundraiser, students are encouraged to bring any and all lose change to vote for their class and against all others. Pennies are used as positive votes while nickels, dimes and quarters are used as negative votes.

This year’s winners were representatives from 2014 graduating class, Turner Staton and MacKenzie Clawson.  Staton was excited to win.

“It was a pretty cool experience! I had been told by some of the StuCo reps that I know that they had kept me as a nominee for our senior year which was pretty honoring!” Staton said.

His co-peppy partner, Senior MacKenzie Clawson agreed.

“I’m really honored and I’m really glad I can have that title!” Clawson said.

After a close race, seniors ended their last year going out with a bang taking the title back from last year’s sophomore class winners, Joel Currence and Grace George.

“It was a really good time,” Staton said, “I’m honored to be Mr. School Spirit”.

Even with lack of advertisement this year, Student Council was extremely impressed with the participation from the student body and expects even more in the future. About $30 in coins were deposited and went to the student council fund which helped in homecoming activities.

It is encouraged to go all out and show your school spirit if you’re interested in being nominated in years to come!
