The Germans Are Here!
LHS is hosting German exchange students from September 24th until October 4th. They will only be in the school for six of those days.
According to German teacher, Cindy Biermann, “The goal of the exchange is for the German students to experience the everyday routine of an American high school student. To accomplish this they will be shadowing their American host students, attending classes, sporting events, and going on field trips during their visit here. In the classrooms they will be expected to follow the same rules as everyone else.”

Journalism 1 students asked the German students about their visit:
Q: What are your first impressions of America?
A: Madeleine: Clichés are true: houses look like the films. Everything’s bigger.
A: Felix: School is huge and it is very long. And the smell. And everyone is very
friendly.
Q: What do you think of the food here?
A: Madeleine: [I’m] excited for the food because I love to cook. No one actually eats the traditional German good and they eat a lot of pizza and pasta [at home.] Breakfast [here] is very good, I’m not used to breakfasts like this. I do like fast food but not used to it because of being very fit.
A: Felix: [I like] Waffles, fruits are very sweet and ripe. [I dislike] fake foods because of preservatives.
Q: What do you miss from Germany?
A: Madeleine: The food, and school because it’s shorter and smaller
A: Felix: The food!
Q: What were your thoughts on America before you arrived here?
A: Madeleine: stereotypes
A: Felix: lots of clichés, everything would be bigger
Q: What is something you will remember about America?
A: Felix: People are friendlier.
Q: How is your school different from ours?
A: Madeleine: the days are shorter and have different classes everyday.
Q: What do you like more about America than Germany?
A: Madeleine: The supermarkets, the variety of everything.
A: Felix: Everything is bigger, and more space to do things, and the neighborhoods.
Q: Is there anything that you were jealous about that is here in America and not in
Germany?
A: Madeleine: The variety of Oreos.
A: Felix: [You can] buy movies when they come out, in Germany you have to wait a
couple months.
Q: Does being in America make you nervous?
A: Madeleine: No!
A: Felix: No!
