Grateful for the Red and Gold

I really can’t say that I’m grateful for the Royals’ royal screw-up of a season, but I am very pleased with how the Chiefs are doing so far, especially on the offensive end. What I’m not grateful for is the defensive side of the ball.

I mean, come on, the Chiefs were the number one in the power ranking for a few weeks. They obviously had to have a decent defense, but recently they haven’t been doing as well as we would like. Against the Oakland Raiders alone, they allowed 505 total yards, 417 of those being passing yards. They also caused zero turnovers and gave up 32 first downs to the Raiders. Granted, they are missing three of their starters under injury- safety Eric Berry, defensive end Tamba Hali and linebacker Justin Houston. However, they still have good replacements for all of them. Since Hali is probable for return and if Houston, whose listed under “questionable”, heals up quickly hopefully all will be, more or less, back to normal.

Skipping over the embarrassment of the Raiders game, let’s focus on the offense, more importantly, quarterback Alex Smith.

With a completion percentage of 69.6, 1 interception in the whole season, 18 passing touchdowns and a total of 2,444 yards so far in the season, he’s placed second by stats in the NFL, right after Tom Brady. For a 33 year old coming up on his 13th season in the NFL, he’s doing pretty good. He’s really been leading the offense to victories, along with tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and running back Kareem Hunt.

So far, Hunt’s had a great rookie season with a total of 1131 yards (800 rushing, 331 passing), six touchdowns and only one fumble. By rushing yards, he is number one in the league, making a total of four Chiefs players in the top five of the NFL by stats, including Smith, Kelce and cornerback Marcus Peters; and yes, Peters is still kneeling before every game, despite having a conversation with the Chiefs chairman, Clark Hunt. Let’s hope that the Chiefs can improve their record and stay at the top of their division and hopefully see an AFC championship game.
