StuCo Strong

StuCo+Strong

by Nathan Hunt |

Wham! Out of nowhere a rubber hammer that is making thunder noises and glowing blue smacks you. Walking into the Blue Jay Tower across the street from LHS, new sophomore members of Student Council were not expecting this. Yet one thing new members will learn while being in the club is to expect the unexpected. Executive officers spent the last week of August planning for the organization’s first main event, a retreat, which was held on Friday, August 31 to welcome all 40 members, new and old. The theme for the overall year is “StuCo Strong”, and the four Executive officers dressed up as the Avengers to celebrate it.

“The point of our retreat was to basically bring the new StuCo members together so everyone can meet and get to know each other,” Executive Treasurer Jessyka Vernickas said, “Also, it was the start of Homecoming planning. The theme for this year is “Go for the Gold”, Marie Taylor, the senior class vice president, came up with it; it’s a great idea.”

While playing “ice-breakers”, games that encourage students get to know each other, and clapping the MASC chant, new members were introduced to a world of leadership. Lasting all day, the retreat allowed students to brainstorm for future events that StuCo is responsible for managing.

“During the Retreat, we think of a lot of different ideas for Homecoming and discuss many events planned,” Vernickas said, “In order to make planning easier, we break into committees that organize different parts of the whole.” Homecoming committees were assigned, which consist of publicity, which gets the word out about when and where the dance is, fence decorating where each class and club gets a section of the fence surrounding the field to decorate with school spirit.

The second annual carnival is another committee formed, which involves the greater community of Liberty. The fourth committee is Dance Decorations, the largest of all four committees; it is in charge of all decorations that go into the dance. Liberty’s Homecoming week is October 1st-5th, for more information about dates and times, visit the Liberty High school homepage. If you wish to help the LHS Student Council with any donations to the carnival or any other Homecoming event, contact Melanie Prince, the Student Council adviser.
