The Ultimate Sport

by Jacob Bland |

Ultimate frisbee is similar to the gym class classic handball. The sport takes a combination of skills such as catching, throwing and running.

The sport is mainly for fun, but can also be competitive. Liberty’s team is one of the most talented among several other teams in the metro, which means higher expectations for this season.

“We are one of the best programs in the area, partly because we are more dedicated than some other teams around,” senior Stewart Duncan said.

With such expectations, the team will be taking on more competition this year so they can display more of their talent. Since last year, the team has vastly improved.

“Several guys last year had limited skills. Now they are valuable players,” Duncan said.

The team has grown around three seniors: Stewart Duncan, Ben Reynolds and Brendon Woody.

One of those seniors looking to contribute to the team is Woody.

“I play mid-field. If we play zone, I’m in the middle, because I’m 6-foot-5 and can bat stuff down,” Woody said.

The team will be participating in five tournaments this year that consist of all men teams, all day events, that colleges such as the University of Arkansas will be attending. The team will also be traveling out of state to participate in a tournament.

“We have five tournaments lined up, and the farthest we will be traveling is Oklahoma,” Reynolds said.

The team is already gearing up for their season, holding practices every Thursday night at Bennett Park. During those practices, the team goes over the sport’s fundamentals.

“We set-up throwing dills, tactic drills, we go over defensive tactics and we condition,” Duncan said.

The team also plays Frisbee, just because they enjoy the sport.

“We play three times a week and pick-up games on Wednesdays and Thursdays, senior Ricky Woodruff said.

The season starts in the spring and is looking for players to come out that are into having a great time.

“Because of the many tournaments and college teams being present, and other experienced teams, we are looking to score a lot of points and keep our record above .500,” Woody said.
