Let’s School the Teachers

In the middle of every Court-warming assembly is another tradition that holds a special place in the hearts of students and staff members alike. The student vs. teacher basketball game is the one time a year that students get a chance to school their teachers.

As each teacher takes the court, the students in the crowd go wild. They are all followed by unique introductions, like as coach Chad Frigon’s calves are “as big as Africa.”

Soon after, the senior student basketball players enter while the school improv group, Exit 1-6, introduces them, making fun of their last names. Senior Clayton Bench was teased.

“What an unfortunate last name,” senior Kailyn Peterson said. “Hopefully you won’t be on the bench for this one.”

For the first three quarters, the game was close, each team dribbling up and down the court making or missing shots from left to the right. It is hard to know which team was leading due to the scoreboard being compromised by a biased staff member, but some would say the students were truly in the lead.

Also, take into consideration that the officials were staff members, coaches Noah Simpson and  Zach Werner, who did more than call the game in the teachers’ favor. They also passed teachers the ball after taking it from the students, but all in good fun.

As soon as the third quarter buzzer rang, the cheerleaders and dance team formed a spirit tunnel. One by one, the Special Olympics team ran through wearing big smiles.

The scoreboard was set 0-0 as they began to play. The first shot came from the students, followed by the next and every shot to follow until the last buzzer. Sophomore Ryan Bremer was on fire as he drained lay-up after lay-up on the teachers. At this point it was clear, the Special Olympians had shut-out the teachers to reign in a victory.

With one Blue Jay student-victory down, hope for the big Court-warming game this evening lingered in the field house.
