A Good Read

A+Good+Read

The turnout was contained by 100% X-chromosomes.  One of Liberty High School’s most recently founded clubs, The Book Club, had their very first meeting on September 21st last week. Glori Fagan and Alison Schultz are the new club’s sponsors and Library Media Center staff members as well.

Being a Librarian, Mrs. Fagan knows her way through the rows of paper that make up the aisles of Liberty High School’s library. It would not be a far-fetched statement to say that Mrs. Fagan has hundreds of great books up her sleeve for the girls to read, but she plans on holding off for the time being. At their meeting, Fagan had the girls go to a site called goodreads.com, which, in an essence, is a social network for people who enjoy reading.

The girls filled out a survey on their likes and dislikes in books, and connected with the other group members on the networking site. The other thing that was done at the first meeting was deciding when to meet and how often.

“We’ll probably be meeting once a month on Tuesdays,” said Mrs. Fagan. Official dates have yet to be determined.

Jordan Green and her friend, Morgan Osbourne, are both members of the new club.

“We just wanted to try something different. We love to read, and we just wanted to read some new types of books,” said Green. Currently, Green is reading It by Stephen King. Although a good book, Green said it is a bit out of her comfort zone. “It’s a weird story,” Green said.

It appears that with the cohesiveness of the group, the girls will find book club to be an enjoyable and enriching experience.

“The girls that showed up seemed to all gravitate towards the same genre,” said Fagan, which into the category of Nicholas Sparks and the Twilight series.

The sponsors will be reading too.

“Currently, I’m reading a book called The Tower, The Zoo, and The Tortoise, which is about a modern-day Beefeater (the British guards with the big, black, and furry hats) at the London tower.”

The often under-appreciated subject, reading, will be receiving some well-deserved attention from these girls and the rest of the LMC staff.
