Finding French

by Ashley McGee |

It may be simply known as an international language, but few will ever look at what this truly means. It is the ability to connect minds, destroy cultural boundaries and bring peace from turmoil like understanding can come from confusion. However, discovering the culture behind it is what French Club is all about.

“This is my first year in French Club, but I hope I will be able to understand it [French language and culture] better,” senior Haley McLeod said.

For many, French Club is just an extension of the basic cultural knowledge already gained in the elective French class. Other students, however, some who have never studied French at all, choose to join instead for the exciting activities the club participates in each month. Among these are food, movies and games all relating to French and its corresponding culture.

“I joined French Club because I thought it would be fun and because I have French and I hope it will help me do better,” junior Josh Warren said. “Mostly, though, I want to learn how the culture influences our own.”

These influences are not hard to find. Even within the first meeting, students were introduced to a common French breakfast consisting of a baguette and chocolate-like substance called Nutella. Among the dining experience was also a drink called Orangina, which slightly resembles carbonated orange juice with a taste similar to a sourer version of the American orange soda, and sparkling water, which has recently experienced a spike in popularity within the American way of life.
